This post is an advertisement feature with Boots UK but all thoughts are my own.

Even though beauty salons are now open, it’s hard to get an appointment due to the backlog and I’ve gotten so used to doing treatments on myself at home for a fraction of the price I’d pay in a salon. During lockdown, we’ve had to adapt so much, one way I managed to adapt was by creating my own routines for facial, manicure and pedicure which I have compiled into this post in case you fancy practising any of these treatments on yourself! One place I always go to for my skincare is Boots, I find that they have the best skincare ranges out there and there is so much to choose from.

Clinique foaming cleanser, Pixi collagen mask, Pixi retinol toner, La Roche Posay SPF and Origins Ginzing Moisturiser

Something I was really looking forward to before lockdown was announced was treating myself to a spa facial. Once I’ve finished a placement I love having a bit of a pamper, so instead I embraced making my own at-home monthly express facial routine. I use my everyday skincare routine but add in certain steps to make it feel like I’m having a bit more of a pamper.

The first step in my facial routine is to thoroughly cleanse my face using Clinique Rinse-Off Foaming Cleanser before following with Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Scrub. This leaves my skin feeling really clean and smooth, it removes all the dead skin on my face and cleanses right into my pores. I follow my cleanse with Pixi Retinol Tonic to remove any last traces of dirt that may still be on my skin.

I follow this by using 2 drops of The Ordinary Niacinamide 10ml + Zinc 1% mixed with 2 drops of The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA all over my face, followed by 2 drops of Matrixyl 10% + HA focused on my forehead, around my eyes and around my mouth, which all together promise to reduce scars, stimulate collagen and elastin production and combat sebum over-production to reduce blemishes.

I then use the Pixi Collagen Plumping Mask (can you tell I’m really trying to prevent wrinkles here?!), this makes the routine more of an ‘express’ facial as I can actually leave this mask on and don’t need to wait to wash it off. Afterwards, I apply my Origins Oil-Free Energy-Boosting Ginzing moisturiser, both products leave my skin feeling nourished and ready for the most important and final step of my facial routine, especially during these summer months – SPF! I love using La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Gel-Cream SPF50+ as it doesn’t leave a sticky or oily residue like some SPFs I’ve tried in the past, it’s very light on the skin and protects you from those nasty UVA+UVB rays! It is also non-comedogenic, which is an important factor I look for in my skincare.

Express Manicure

Due to the nature of my degree course, I’m unable to have my nails painted unless I’m on annual leave or on a university block, but I like to make sure I do a fresh manicure every 2-3 weeks to keep my nails looking nice. I carry out prep work by using a cuticle pusher and knife, then removing my cuticles with a nipper and making sure my nail bed is completely clean before applying Bioderma Atoderm Hand and Nail Cream to keep my hands and nails nourished.

With all the extra handwashing that people are probably doing recently, this is a great idea to keep your hands from becoming cracked and sore! I use this hand and nail cream religiously to ensure my hands are kept healthy and if my hands become sore from the harsh hand soaps, this helps to repair them.

My favourite routine to carry out at home is by far my pedicure routine. I love the feeling of having soft feet, and I find this especially important in the summer months when I want to wear my sandals. I begin by filling my foot spa with Kind Natured Foot Milk Soak in Coconut & Shea. This product smells like being on holiday so I often close my eyes and pretend my feet are in a pool or the sea in a tropical destination, rather than just in a foot spa in my living room! I leave my feet to soak for around 10 minutes before applying Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Foot Magic Scrub. This smells like the classic Palmer’s Cocoa butter which is an absolute dream and it makes my feet feel so smooth.

After rinsing the scrub off, I leave my feet to soak for a further 5 minutes before drying them completely and applying Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Foot Magic. This contains peppermint oil and mango butter which leave my feet feeling really refreshed. I usually apply socks after this and leave the cream to soak into my feet overnight, which makes them feel extra soft in the morning!
